The leader in its sector

Choosing Lafarge means choosing the world leader in building materials. Our leadership is founded on unique industrial know-how, significant investments in research and development and partnerships with the most prestigious institutions. Join us!

A world leader: N°1 in Cement, N°2 in Aggregates, and N°4 in Concrete

Cement: in great demand, especially in emerging countries

Lafarge offers a range of cements, hydraulic binders and limes for construction, renovation and public works. In 2011, the Cement Business accounted for more than 60% of the Group's total sales.

Fast-growing markets (China, India, Eastern Europe, etc.) are a key focus of our strategic development plan. They account for more than 50% of Cement Business sales.

Aggregates: the most-consumed material in the world, after water!

Aggregates are an essential ingredient in the manufacture of concrete and constitute the framework of many structures. Lafarge is the world's second largest producer in this sector thanks to its expertise throughout the value chain, from extraction to quarry rehabilitation.

Concrete: a high-tech material at the heart of innovation

The Group has created more than 500 different concrete formulas to meet customers' specific needs: pre-cast concretes, ready-mix concretes, ultra-high performance concretes, etc.

Concrete is now studied at the nanometric scale, bringing it into the high-tech era and allowing it to contribute its many qualities to bold architectural projects.

Prestigious research and development partnerships

Lafarge has developed partnerships with the most important research centers, engineering schools, international institutions and universities in the world.

The Group is a founding member of the "Research Chair in the Science of Sustainable Construction Materials" in partnership with two prestigious French engineering schools: the Ecole des Ponts and the Ecole Polytechnique. The goal is to create a world center of excellence in the science of building materials.

The Lafarge Group also works closely with other universities and organizations:

  • M.I.T. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology),
  • Princeton and the University of California at Berkeley (USA),
  • the universities of Toronto and Sherbrooke (Canada),
  • the C.N.R.S. (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), Europe's leading research organization.

This top-class scientific cooperation helps Lafarge to maintain its leadership position.

Working at the Research center

Gilles Chanvillard, Director of the Structured Materials Division

"The Group's Research center brings together, on a single site, all of the scientific experts who are needed to master materials: chemists, physicists, powder specialists, rheologists, etc. Each project is piloted by a scientific support committee, which gathers and circulates information between experts. Ideas are fed into a knowledge base which, in the spirit of shared innovation, is accessible to everyone."
