Industrial ecology

Lafarge Cement Indonesia has embarked on the Industrial Ecology journey by co-processing waste in its cement kiln located at Lhoknga.

Industrial Ecology concept aims at a creation of a symbiotic environment where waste instead of being dumped or landfilled, shall undergo further treatments so it could get utilized or recovered in appropriate processes. The cement industry, if professionally managed and technically advanced can become the keystone in the structure of the Industrial Ecology system by offering Co-processing services.

Co-processing is a thermal or material recovery or combination of both, where the waste fed into the cement manufacturing process is turned into an integral part of the final product. This waste disposal method does not generate any residual waste and is environmentally very sound.

The main benefits of co-processing are :

  • Conversation of natural resources
  • Creation of new revenue streams and livelihood improvements (new jobs, valorization of otherwise wasted biomass etc.)
  • Reduction of emissions
  • Zero waste solution

Lafarge expertise results in safe waste solutions

The use of waste products cannot be improvised. Lafarge has implemented stringent quality control standards as well as a training policy for its engineers, technicians and foremen. In this way, it is reinforcing the use of alternative fuels and materials while controlling industrial processes. The Group's R&D teams are also making an active contribution in this respect.

The Cement Business considers the use of alternatives and the pursuit of industrial ecology to be separate but complementary parts of its core business. The Business has developed a highly professional strategy as well as expertise and a dedicated organization at Group level and within operational units.

The Group also establishes partnerships with local waste processing specialists. Lafarge has acquired share capital in Systech, a major waste management company in North America.

How to create value from waste

Large amounts of natural resources, particularly minerals and fossil fuels, are used to manufacture cement. For many years the Group has been working to reduce the environmental impact of its activities by finding ways to obtain value from waste products.
